Suits writers started to write out Meghan Markle’s character a year ago

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s engagement may have come as a happy surprise to many when it was announced this week, but for Suits creator Aaron Korsh, it had already been prepared for.

Korsh told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that he and his team of writers had decided to anticipate Markle’s departure several months ago and began to write her character Rachel out of the long-running US legal drama.

“I knew obviously from about a year ago that this relationship was burgeoning,” Korsh told Mishal Husain, “I didn’t want to intrude, so I didn’t want to ask, “Hey, what’s going on? What are you going to do?”

“So the writers decided, collectively, to take a gamble that these two people were in love and it was going to work out.

“As the season progressed, I said I would rather have good things happening to Meghan in her life, which would likely mean her leaving the show, so let’s plan on that,” Korsh continued.

“It’s much easier to undo that if it came to it than just plan on her staying forever and then find out she’s going to go – because the only way to write out a character like that is to have her be hit by a bus or something.”

Season Eight of Suits will be the first not to feature Rachel since the show began. The character didn’t have a dramatic demise in Season Seven, which finished in September, but continued to take on legal work and planned to marry her boyfriend at a future date to allow both to follow their careers.

Markle has said she will retire as an actress after marrying into the Royal Family, when she will be made a Duchess.

Asked if he thought Markle was capable of facing the glare of the public eye, Korsch told Husain: “Meghan has a tremendous amount of poise. If anyone can handle it it’s Meghan.”
